Independent companies were raised by individuals outside of provincial authority. The uniforms were usually paid for by the organizer. Henry Knox, not yet a major general, and merely a Boston bookseller, outfitted his Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company of Boston in a blue coat with red facing similar to the uniform pictured below. Blue became a staple for the artillery. Uniform styles remained stable without any remarkable deviation in cut, but deviations of color were left to the imagination of the buyer.

The Americans responded formally by declaring their independence as a new nation, which is the United States of America. They claimed sovereignty and denied any allegiance with the British monarchy. In 1777, the Continentals captured a British army that resulted France to enter the war on the side of the Americans. In early 1778, the military had strengthened with Britain. We are building the movement to ground our lives and politics in Revolutionary Love! We produce stories, tools, curricula, conferences, films, and mass mobilizations rooted in the ethic of love. Because love is not just a feeling but a form of sweet labor — fierce, bloody, imperfect, and life-giving. In this era of enormous rage, Revolutionary Love is the call of our times.
Those of us who are not white have considerably more trouble not only finding representation of ourselves in mass media and other arenas of public life, but also finding representation that indicates that our humanity is multifaceted. Relating to characters onscreen is necessary not merely for us to feel seen and understood, but also for others who need to see and understand us. When it doesn’t happen, we are all the poorer for it.
